What is backflow testing for an irrigation system?

It’s a safety check on the backflow preventer the device that stops irrigation water (which can contain fertilizer and pesticide) from siphoning back into your home’s drinking water. A certified tester attaches gauges to the assembly and confirms its internal valves still seal properly. If they don’t, the device needs repair or replacement to keep protecting your water.

It depends on your property. The City of Olathe no longer requires testing of residential irrigation backflow devices it’s recommended but not mandatory while commercial properties are required to test annually, with results filed to Aqua Backflow. WaterOne requires it for commercial as well. On the Missouri side, KC Water and several cities require annual testing for all irrigation devices. Either way, your system should have a working device, and we’ll tell you exactly what applies to you.

Where it’s required commercial properties in Olathe and WaterOne, and most Missouri-side systems it’s annual, and your water district will send a notice when your device is due. Even where it isn’t mandated, having it checked periodically is smart, since the device can wear out and stop protecting your water. Scheduling the test with your spring turn-on saves a separate service fee.

We diagnose exactly what failed. In many cases our licensed plumber can rebuild the assembly on-site replacing worn seals or internal parts to get it passing. If it’s beyond repair or freeze-damaged, we replace the device and pull the required cross-connection permit, then re-test and file the passing result.

Yes. We submit your certified test report directly to the right district Aqua Backflow for Olathe, WaterOne, or KC Water so you don’t have to deal with the paperwork or worry about missing a deadline.

A standard test is a flat fee that depends on your device and location (Missouri districts also charge a small submission fee). If a repair or replacement is needed, we’ll quote that separately before doing any work. Call (913) 829-4949 for pricing on your system.
