Most shrubs and trees are best pruned in late winter to early spring, before new growth starts. The big exception is spring-flowering shrubs lilac, forsythia, azalea, and similar which should be trimmed right after they finish blooming, or you’ll cut off next year’s flowers. We time each plant correctly.
Trimming is mostly about appearance shaping shrubs and hedges and cutting back overgrowth. Pruning is about health removing dead, diseased, crossing, or weak branches with proper cuts to improve the plant’s structure. We do both as part of tree and shrub care.
Light shaping is usually fine, but heavy fall pruning isn’t ideal it can spur tender new growth that gets damaged by winter cold, and on spring-flowering shrubs it removes next year’s buds. We’ll tell you what’s safe to cut in fall versus what’s better left until late winter.
