MW Lawn & Landscape delivers and installs mulch across Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa, and Johnson County. We prep and edge your beds, handle the old mulch properly, and hand-spread fresh mulch at the right depth — kept back off your trunks and stems, where piling it does real damage. Java brown, hardwood, cedar, and playground rubber mulch. Family-owned for 25+ years.
Fresh mulch is the fastest, cheapest way to make a property look cared for and one of the best things you can do for the plants in it. It holds moisture through Kansas summers, keeps soil temperatures steady, blocks weed seeds from finding light, and breaks down over time to feed the clay underneath. It’s also the service most commonly done wrong. Piled too deep, it suffocates roots. Piled against trunks and stems, it traps moisture on the bark and invites rot and disease. Dumped on top of three years of old, matted mulch, it starts shedding water instead of holding it. We do it properly: prep and edge the beds, deal with the old material honestly, then hand-spread fresh mulch at the depth your beds actually need and keep it off your plants.

You don’t haul it, shovel it, or find somewhere to park a pile of it. We bring the mulch and install it the same visit.

We spread by hand to an even 2 to 3 inches enough to block weeds and hold moisture, not so much that it smothers roots.

We pull mulch back from tree trunks, shrub crowns, and seedlings. Volcanoes of mulch against bark cause rot, disease, and girdling roots slowly killing the plant they’re supposed to protect.

From java brown and hardwood to cedar and dyed colors plus playground rubber mulch matched to your beds and your home.
The prep is what separates beds that look sharp for a season from beds that look sharp for a week.

We clean up and define your bed edges first, so the new mulch has a crisp line to sit against and stays where we put it.

We pull the weeds that are already there. Mulching over live weeds just hides them for a few weeks they come right back through.

We check what’s already down. Sometimes it just needs turning and a light top-up; sometimes years of matted buildup needs to come out. We tell you which.

We bring the mulch to you no hauling bags, no pile sitting on your driveway for a week.

Spread by hand to an even depth across the whole bed, worked around your plants and pulled back off trunks and stems.

Old material hauled off, walks and drives blown clean. The only thing left behind is a finished bed.

Two to three inches is the sweet spot. That’s enough to block sunlight from weed seeds and hold moisture in the soil, without going so deep that air and water can’t reach the roots. More is not better mulch piled too thick suffocates roots and can start shedding water instead of soaking it in. And whatever the depth, it should always be pulled back from tree trunks and shrub stems, never piled against them.
Most beds want attention once a year, because organic mulch breaks down that’s the point, it’s feeding your soil as it goes. But “attention” doesn’t always mean a full install. If you’ve still got two or three inches down there, the right move is often turning it to freshen the color and adding an inch, not burying it under three more. Do a full 3-inch install every year and within a few seasons you’ve got a matted layer that repels water. We look at what’s actually in your beds and tell you which one you need.
One cubic yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep, or about 160 square feet at 2 inches. So measure your beds length times width add them up, and divide by 100 for a rough yard count at 3 inches. That gets you in the ballpark. When we quote your property we measure it properly, so you’re not guessing or ending up with half a pile left on the driveway.
The dyes themselves are generally not the issue the colorants used in landscape mulch are typically inert. The real question is what wood was dyed. Some cheap colored mulch is made from recycled construction waste and old pallets, which can include treated lumber, and that’s what you want to avoid. Ask any supplier what their dyed product is made from. If you’d rather skip the question entirely, natural, undyed hardwood is a great choice and ages to a nice dark brown on its own.
It depends on a handful of things: the square footage of your beds, how deep they need to go, which mulch you choose, whether the old mulch is being topped up or stripped out, and how much weeding and edging the beds need first. A light refresh on tidy beds is a very different job from resetting beds that haven’t been touched in five years. We’ll measure and give you an exact, no-obligation quote call (913) 829-4949.
Yes. Rubber mulch is a popular choice around play areas because it doesn’t decompose the way wood mulch does, so it holds its depth and color far longer with less upkeep. We deliver and install it. If you’re surfacing around playground equipment, let us know what you’re working with when you call and we’ll talk through the right approach for your space.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.
