MW Lawn & Landscape installs river rock and decorative landscape rock across Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa, and Johnson County. We clear and prep the bed, lay professional-grade fabric, set clean edging, and hand-place your rock at an even depth a permanent, low-maintenance ground cover that won’t wash out every spring like mulch. Family-owned for 25+ years.
River rock is the low-maintenance answer for beds you’re tired of re-mulching every spring. Done right, a rock bed lasts for years it doesn’t break down, blow away, or wash onto your driveway in a hard Kansas rain, and it never needs an annual refresh. Done wrong, it’s a headache: weeds pushing through thin coverage, stone sinking into Olathe’s clay soil, and rock scattered across your lawn. The difference is entirely in the prep. We clear the bed, install commercial-grade fabric, set clean edging to hold the stone in place, and hand-place your rock evenly at the proper depth so it looks sharp and stays that way.

We clear out old mulch or rock, remove weeds and debris, and grade the bed before a single stone goes down. Skipping this step is why most rock beds fail.

Commercial-grade landscape fabric slows weeds from below, and clean edging keeps your rock in the bed instead of in your lawn and mower.

We place rock by hand for even coverage at a consistent depth no thin spots where soil shows through and weeds find light

It comes down to a few things: the square footage of your beds, the rock type and size you choose, how deep it needs to go, how much prep the bed needs, and whether we’re hauling away old mulch or rock first. Rock costs more up front than mulch but you’re not paying to redo it every spring, so it usually costs less over time. We’ll measure your beds and give you an exact, no-obligation quote. Neither is better everywhere they do different jobs, and we install both. Rock is permanent: it doesn’t decompose, doesn’t blow or wash away, and never needs an annual refresh, which makes it ideal for low-maintenance beds, borders, slopes, and areas that take hard runoff. Mulch breaks down and feeds the soil, holds moisture, and keeps roots cooler which makes it better around plantings, flower beds, and anything you want to actually thrive. Rock also absorbs and holds summer heat, so it can stress heat-sensitive plants. We’ll walk your property and tell you which beds suit which.
Yes and here’s the honest part. Fabric does an excellent job stopping weeds from pushing up through the bed from below, and it keeps your stone from sinking into the soil, which matters a lot in our clay. What it can’t do is stop weeds forever: over the years, dust, leaves, and organic debris settle down into the rock, and weed seeds will root in that layer on top of the fabric. Proper depth, clean edging, and occasional cleanout keep that under control and it’s a fraction of the work of re-mulching.
For most river rock ground cover, roughly 2 to 3 inches, adjusted for the size of the stone larger rock needs a bit more depth to cover properly. Going too thin is the most common DIY mistake: sunlight reaches the fabric and soil, weeds take hold, and you can see through to the ground. We install to a consistent depth across the whole bed so it looks even and does its job.
It helps. Rock is permeable, so water moves through it instead of pooling on top the way it can with matted mulch, and stone channels like dry creek beds can direct runoff away from low spots while looking like a natural part of the landscape. That said, decorative rock on its own won’t fix a real drainage problem standing water, a soggy yard, or water running toward your foundation needs a proper drainage solution. If that’s what you’re dealing with, tell us and we’ll take a look.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.
