The right landscape lighting turns a yard you only see in daylight into one you enjoy every evening, with safer steps and walkways, a warmly lit façade, and real curb appeal after dark. As part of our Design & Build work, MW Lawn & Landscape helps Olathe and Johnson County homeowners plan and add landscape lighting that fits the whole yard, and we handle the project so it’s done right.
Good landscape lighting does three jobs at once: it makes your home safer to walk up to after dark, it deters trouble by removing the shadows around the house, and it shows off the landscaping and architecture you already paid for. Done well, it’s layered and subtle you see the warm pools of light and the lit trees and walkway, not the fixtures themselves.
We approach lighting the way we approach the rest of a project as part of the whole yard. If we’re already building a new walkway or refreshing your planting beds, lighting is a natural add-on that ties it together. We design the plan, handle the project, and make sure it’s done to a professional, low-voltage standard.

Lighting is about where the light lands, not how many fixtures you buy. We plan the layers: path, accent, and feature lighting so the effect looks intentional

Lit steps, walkways, and entries mean no more guessing in the dark, and a well-lit home is a far less inviting target.

Because we handle your Design & Build work, we plan lighting alongside the walkways, beds, and trees in one coordinated project, with one point of contact.

Modern landscape lighting runs on safe 12-volt LED fixtures that sip power and last for years the industry standard we plan around.
Most yards use a mix here are the techniques we design around.

Low fixtures that wash soft light across walkways, driveways, and garden edges so every step is clear after dark.

Fixtures aimed up into trees, columns, and the façade to add depth and drama and highlight the best features of the home.

Fixtures placed high in trees or eaves to cast a soft, natural glow down over lawns, seating areas, and gathering spots.

Spot and in-ground well lights that pick out a specimen tree, a boulder, a water feature, or an architectural detail.

Discreet lights built into steps, walls, and seating areas for safety and a finished, high-end look on hardscapes.

The plan that ties it together balancing the layers so the yard reads as one composition, not a row of spotlights.
Big-box solar stakes and DIY kits have their place but here’s the difference a designed, low-voltage system makes.

25+ years designing and building Johnson County landscapes; lighting is one more layer we plan into the whole.

Lighting works best when designed with the walkways, beds, and trees, not bolted on after. As your Design & Build team, we plan it together.

You deal with MW from the first consultation through the finished project, no juggling separate vendors.

We light what actually improves the home's safety, curb appeal, and key features instead of selling you fixtures you don’t need.

What Olathe and Johnson County homeowners ask when they’re thinking about outdoor lighting.

Three big ones. Safety: lit steps, walkways, and entries mean no stumbling in the dark. Security: a well-lit home removes the shadows that make an easy target. And curb appeal: the right lighting shows off your home and landscaping after dark and extends the hours you can enjoy the yard. Most homeowners also see it as adding real value to the property.
The common ones are path and walkway lights, uplighting for trees and the façade, downlighting (also called moonlighting) that casts a soft glow from above, accent and well lights for specimen trees or features, and step and hardscape lights built into stairs and walls. Most yards use a mix; the art is in how they’re layered.
For a result that lasts and looks designed, yes. Solar stakes dim as their batteries fade, and DIY kits tend to look like evenly spaced runway lights. A professionally planned low-voltage system uses durable wired LED fixtures, hides the hardware, and puts light exactly where it belongs. It’s the difference between ‘we added some lights’ and ‘the home looks designed for it.’
It depends on scope, the number and quality of fixtures, the length of the wiring runs, the transformer, and how layered the design is. A front-walkway-and-façade project is modest; a full-yard design is larger. We scope it after a free consultation rather than posting a flat price, so you’re pricing your actual yard.
Very modern landscape lighting runs on low-voltage 12-volt LED fixtures. Industry figures put LED at roughly 80% less energy than old halogen bulbs with a lifespan up to around 50,000 hours, so a well-designed system adds very little to the power bill.
Yes, that’s exactly when it makes the most sense. If we’re building a walkway or outdoor steps, planning the lighting at the same time means the wiring is handled cleanly as part of the build and the finished result looks intentional, not added on.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.![]()
