A walkway is the first thing guests walk on when they come to your door and in Johnson County’s freeze-thaw winters, it’s also the first thing to heave and crack if it’s built wrong. MW Lawn & Landscape installs paver and natural-stone walkways and garden paths on a properly compacted base, with our own crews, so the path you pay for still sits flat years from now.
We’ll respond within 24 hours
Most failed walkways in this area don’t fail because of the pavers they fail because of what’s underneath. A walkway is only as stable as its base. Olathe sits on heavy clay that holds water and swells and shrinks through our freeze-thaw cycles, so a path laid on thin or uncompacted fill will lift at the joints, rock underfoot, and open gaps within a season or two.
We build the other way around excavation to the right depth, a compacted crushed-stone base built up in lifts, a leveling layer, then pavers or stone set tight with edge restraint and locked in with polymeric sand. Where water is part of the problem, we fold in proper yard drainage so the base stays dry and the walk stays flat.

We build the base for the soil we actually have here heavy clay and freeze-thaw not a generic spec. That’s the difference between a walk that stays flat and one that heaves.

The crew that quotes your walkway is the crew that builds it. We don’t hand hardscape to a sub, so there’s one point of accountability from layout to the final walkthrough

Concrete pavers for clean, classic front walks; natural stone or flagstone for a higher-end or informal garden path. We help you match the material to the look and the budget.

Polymeric sand hardens the joints and slows weeds, but it isn’t permanent it wears and can need a top-up every few years. We tell you that up front rather than sell it as maintenance-free.
Designed to fit your yard, built on a base that holds handled the right way, start to finish.

We walk the site with you, mark the path line, and set the width and shape to fit how you move through the yard a wider front walk for curb appeal, a curving route for a garden path

We dig to the right depth for a full base and grade the trench to drain water away from the walk and your foundation not toward it.

The part you never see and the part that matters most: crushed stone built up and plate-compacted in lifts so the surface stays flat through freeze-thaw.

Pavers or natural stone set tight on a leveling layer, cut clean at edges and curves, and checked for an even, trip-free surface.

Edge restraint locks the border so the path can’t spread, and polymeric sand fills and stabilizes the joints to slow weeds and shifting.

We haul off spoil, clean the surface, and walk the finished path with you so you know what was built and how to care for it.
The real decision most Olathe homeowners face. Here’s the honest comparison natural stone and flagstone sit alongside pavers as the premium, longest-lasting option on the left.

Intro: 25+ years on Johnson County properties and the base-first build a walkway in clay soil actually needs.

The crew that quotes your walkway builds it. One team, one point of accountability, from layout to the final walkthrough.

We spec the base for the soil we have here, not a generic depth the reason our walks stay flat instead of heaving.

A crew that has worked Olathe and the surrounding metro for years and knows this area’s conditions firsthand.

We tell you what polymeric sand does and doesn’t do, and what a walkway needs over time no maintenance-free promises we can’t keep.
Three steps to a walkway that holds.
Fill out the form or call (913) 829-4949. We walk the yard, mark the path line, talk material options, and give you a written quote on the actual project.
We excavate to depth, grade for drainage, build and compact the crushed-stone base in lifts, then set the pavers or stone on a leveling layer cut clean at every edge and curve.
Edge restraint goes in, polymeric sand is swept and set, the surface is cleaned, and we walk the finished path with you and cover simple care.
What Olathe and Johnson County homeowners ask us before they build a new path
Still Have Questions? Tell us about your walkway and we’ll set up a free on-site estimate.
For most Olathe homes we recommend concrete pavers. They cost more upfront than poured concrete, but they flex with our freeze-thaw clay instead of cracking as one slab, and if a section ever settles, individual pavers can be lifted and reset you can’t spot-repair a cracked concrete walk. Poured concrete is the budget option when look isn’t the priority; pavers and natural stone are what we install when curb appeal and long-term stability matter.
It depends on length, width, material, and how much base and grading the site needs a short paver front walk and a long flagstone garden path are very different projects. We don’t post a flat price because it would be wrong for most yards. We give a free on-site estimate so you’re pricing your actual walkway.
A paver or stone walkway built on a properly compacted base can last decades. The pavers themselves hold up for a very long time; the maintenance item is the joints polymeric sand wears and may need a top-up every few years. A walk that fails early almost always failed at the base, which is exactly where we spend the time.
Olathe’s heavy clay holds water, and our winters cycle through freeze and thaw repeatedly. That swelling and shrinking lifts anything sitting on a thin or uncompacted base. The fix isn’t a better paver it’s a deeper, properly compacted crushed-stone base and good drainage, so the ground movement doesn’t reach the surface.
Yes the front walk is one of the first things a visitor or buyer sees, and a clean, level paver or stone path reads as a well-kept home. Widening a narrow walk, adding a gentle curve, or switching from cracked concrete to pavers is one of the higher-impact, lower-cost exterior upgrades you can make.
Walkway steps and standalone outdoor stairs are a separate scope for us they’re built and priced on our Outdoor Steps page, not here. If your path needs a step or two for a grade change, mention it when we come out and we’ll fold the right crew and plan in. See our Outdoor Steps page for that work.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.![]()
