If you have a cool-season lawn tall fescue or bluegrass, which is most of Johnson County you should not put down heavy nitrogen in the heat of summer. K-State Extension is clear that excess nitrogen during hot, humid weather makes brown patch worse and forces tender growth the grass can’t support in the heat. The right summer move is iron for color without the growth, plus grub control and disease monitoring. The big feedings belong in fall. Warm-season lawns like zoysia and bermuda are the exception they’re actively growing in summer and are handled differently.
In a Kansas summer, circular brown patches on fescue are very often brown patch a fungal disease, not drought even though it can look like dry stress at first. It thrives in high humidity and warm nights, and it’s made worse by excess nitrogen and evening watering. Grubs are the other common cause: those patches wilt and pull up like loose carpet. Brown patch is a fungal disease (Rhizoctonia solani) that damages tall fescue in hot, humid summer weather, showing up as circular olive-to-brown patches, sometimes with a gray ‘smoke ring’ at the edge. We manage it the way K-State recommends: avoid summer nitrogen, water deep and early in the day rather than in the evening, mow tall, and apply preventative fungicide when conditions favor an outbreak. Caught early and managed right, the lawn recovers when cooler weather returns.
For most Johnson County lawns, yes summer is when grubs hatch and begin feeding on grass roots, and by the time you see the damage (wilting, thinning patches that lift up easily) the roots are already chewed through. A properly timed grub control application stops them before that happens. It’s one of the most valuable things you can do for a lawn in summer, and it’s part of our summer treatment.
Two things matter most. Mow tall 3 to 4 inches for tall fescue because taller blades shade the soil, keep roots cooler, and crowd out weeds; cutting short is one of the fastest ways to stress a lawn in July. And water deep and infrequently, early in the morning, never in the evening, since overnight moisture on the blades is exactly what brown patch needs to spread. A consistent, well-timed irrigation system makes this far easier to get right.
