Here’s the problem with feeding a tree by spreading fertilizer on the ground: most of it never reaches the tree. It’s a method of feeding trees by injecting a liquid nutrient blend under pressure directly into the soil around the roots, rather than spreading dry fertilizer on the surface. Using a soil probe, we work in a grid across the root zone from near the trunk out toward the edge of the canopy so the nutrients land right where the tree’s feeder roots take them up. It gets the feeding to the tree instead of to your lawn, and the pressure also loosens compacted soil along the way.
Less deep than the name suggests, and there’s a good reason for that. The ‘deep’ in the name is a leftover from older practices that injected a foot or more down but research has shown that a tree’s feeder roots, the ones that actually absorb nutrients, live in roughly the top several inches of soil. So modern deep root fertilization is placed there, generally around four to eight inches down, right in the feeder-root zone. Going deeper would just put the nutrients below where the tree can use them.
Fall is the sweet spot, and it’s when we build it into our tree and shrub program. In fall, trees are shifting energy toward root growth and storage ahead of winter, so nutrients delivered to the root zone then are put to good use and set the tree up for a strong spring. Spring is a secondary window. As long as the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged, feeding can be done at other times too, but fall is where it does the most good for most trees here.
Not every tree does, and we’ll tell you honestly. A mature, healthy tree growing in good soil may be fine on its own. The trees that benefit most are the ones fighting our conditions: young trees still establishing, trees in compacted or poor soil (common in newer subdivisions and high-traffic yards), and any tree showing signs of stress thin canopy, pale leaves, slow growth. For those, deep root feeding can make a real, visible difference. We assess first and only recommend it where it’ll help.
For most trees that need it, once a year is the standard typically in fall as part of an ongoing care program. Trees that are actively recovering from stress or establishing after planting may benefit from it more consistently for a couple of seasons until they’re thriving on their own. A healthy, established tree in good soil might only need it occasionally, if at all. It’s not something to over-apply, which is another reason we assess the tree before recommending a schedule.
Give it a season. Deep root fertilization works below ground first building root health and soil condition before the results show up where you can see them, so the fuller canopy, better color, and stronger growth generally appear over the following growing season rather than in a week or two. For a stressed or declining tree, recovery can take longer still. It’s a long-game treatment for the long-lived, valuable plants in your yard, not a quick cosmetic fix.
