MW Lawn & Landscape keeps your trees and shrubs healthy across Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa, and Johnson County with a 4-step care program dormant oil, season-long insect and mite control, disease treatment, and fall deep-root fertilization. We protect against the pests that hit our area hardest, from Japanese beetles and bagworms to emerald ash borer and we diagnose the real problem first, because sometimes it isn’t a bug at all. Family-owned for 25+ years.
The trees and shrubs around your home are worth more than almost anything else in your landscape and they’re the slowest and most expensive things to replace. A mature shade tree lost to emerald ash borer or a row of shrubs stripped by bagworms isn’t a one-season setback; it’s decades gone. Our tree and shrub program is built to protect that investment year-round: a four-step cycle of dormant oil in early spring, insect and mite control through the growing season, disease treatment, and a deep-root feeding in fall. It’s the same approach K-State Extension outlines for keeping Kansas trees and shrubs healthy against our region’s specific pests and diseases.
But we start every job the same way by figuring out what’s actually wrong. A surprising amount of tree and shrub decline in Johnson County isn’t a pest or a disease at all: it’s environmental. Trees planted too deep, soil piled over the roots, mulch heaped against the trunk, a missing root flare. Spraying those trees does nothing. So before we treat, we diagnose and if the problem is how a tree was planted or mulched rather than a bug, we’ll tell you, and tell you how to fix it.

Dormant oil, insect and mite control, disease treatment, and deep-root fertilization timed across the year so your trees and shrubs are protected in every season.

Much tree decline is environmental, not pest or disease. We identify the real cause first and won’t sell you a treatment that can’t fix a planting problem.

Ours is a four-step program spread across the year. It starts with a dormant oil application in early spring that smothers overwintering mites, scale, and insect eggs. Through the growing season we apply insect and mite control targeted to the specific pests attacking your plants, plus disease treatment for the fungal problems common here. Then in fall we finish with deep-root fertilization, injecting nutrients right into the root zone before winter. Every visit also includes a look at the overall health of your trees and shrubs, so we catch problems early.
Yes. Emerald ash borer has killed ash trees across the Kansas City metro, and once it’s established in a tree it’s usually fatal without treatment. The key is acting before the infestation is advanced a healthy or lightly affected ash can often be protected, while a tree that’s already lost much of its canopy may be too far gone. If you have ash trees, it’s worth having us look at them and walk you through your treatment options before it’s too late.
Because it may not be a pest at all. A large share of tree and shrub decline in our area is environmental rather than biological: a tree planted too deep, soil or sod piled over the root zone, mulch mounded up against the trunk in a ‘volcano,’ or a root flare that’s buried. These slowly choke a tree, and the symptoms yellowing leaves, thin canopy, early fall color look a lot like disease. Spraying won’t fix any of them. That’s why we diagnose first: if the problem is how the tree was planted or mulched, we’ll tell you how to correct it instead of selling you a treatment that can’t work.
Deep-root fertilization injects fertilizer under pressure directly into the soil around a tree’s roots, in a grid pattern for even coverage, rather than just spreading it on the surface where lawn grass grabs most of it. It gets nutrients to where trees actually feed. It’s especially valuable for young trees still establishing, older or stressed trees, and any tree showing signs of poor vigor. For a healthy, well-established tree in good soil it’s optional but for most trees in a typical Johnson County yard, that fall feeding makes a real difference in vigor and resilience.
Timing is everything with tree and shrub pests, and it’s why a program beats one-off spraying. Dormant oil goes on in early spring before growth starts. Insect treatments are timed to each pest’s life cycle bagworms, for instance, have a fairly narrow window when they’re small and vulnerable, and miss it and they’re much harder to control. Disease treatment is timed to the conditions that trigger it, and deep-root feeding goes down in fall. Because each treatment has its own right moment, a scheduled program is what keeps your plants covered all year.
For established trees and valuable shrubs, almost always because the math is lopsided. A season of program treatments costs a fraction of removing and replacing a single mature shade tree, and nothing replaces the decades of growth. Emerald ash borer, bagworms on evergreens, and needle cast on spruce can all kill outright if left alone. The program is essentially insurance on the most valuable and least replaceable living things in your landscape.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.
