It’s an application that targets white grubs the beetle larvae living in your soil and feeding on grass roots. There are two kinds. A preventive treatment goes down before the eggs hatch and creates protection in the soil, so grubs die while they’re small. A curative treatment is applied after grubs are confirmed and actively feeding, and it’s essentially damage control. Both have to be watered into the soil to reach the root zone. Prevention is cheaper, more forgiving on timing, and far more reliable.
Preventive grub control goes down from June through mid-July in the Olathe area. That timing is tied to the beetle cycle: masked chafers emerge from the soil around mid-June and their peak flight is the first week or two of July, so treating in that window puts protection in place before this season’s eggs hatch. If you miss it and grubs are confirmed feeding, the curative window is roughly mid-to-late August, while they’re still small enough to control. By September they’re large, and that’s when damage really shows.
The classic one is turf that pulls up easily, like a loose piece of carpet that happens because the roots holding it down have been eaten. You’ll also see spongy or wilting patches that don’t green up no matter how much you water, and irregular dead spots spreading through an otherwise healthy lawn. Another tell-tale sign is skunks or raccoons tearing up sections of turf overnight; they’re digging for the grubs. If you’re seeing any of that, it’s worth having us confirm it, because drought stress and brown patch can look similar and need completely different treatment.
Not necessarily. If your lawn has no history of grub damage and isn’t showing signs, you may not need a treatment at all this year and we’ll tell you that. But if you’ve had grubs before, annual preventive control is inexpensive insurance, because by the time damage appears the roots are already gone and you’re paying to reseed instead. It’s built into our full-season program for that reason.
Because the grubs are in the soil, not on the surface. Grub products have to be watered into the ground within about a day of application if they sit on top of the grass, sunlight breaks them down and you get poor control or none at all. Watering beforehand also helps by drawing grubs up nearer the surface, and watering after moves the product down into the root zone where they’re feeding. It’s the step most DIY applications get wrong, and it’s the difference between a treatment that works and one that wastes your money.
It depends how far it went. Light damage often fills back in on its own with proper feeding and watering through the fall. Where grubs killed the turf outright, those patches have no roots left and will need reseeding. The good news is that grub damage usually becomes visible in late summer and early fall which is exactly the best time to aerate and overseed in the Kansas City area, so recovery and your fall lawn work line up naturally.
