Outdoor steps are the one part of your landscape where a small build mistake becomes a real safety problem an uneven riser or a step that heaves in winter is how people trip. MW Lawn & Landscape builds stone, block, and boulder steps across Olathe and Johnson County with consistent, safe rise and run, set on a properly compacted base so they stay level and solid for years. Our own crews, start to finish
Steps are the most unforgiving part of a landscape to build. A walkway that settles a little is a cosmetic issue; a step that settles a little is a trip hazard. The two things that make outdoor steps safe and long-lasting are consistent geometry every riser the same height, every tread the same depth and a base built to hold in Johnson County’s heavy clay and freeze-thaw winters.
We build steps in natural stone, modular block, or boulders to match the look you want, always on an excavated, compacted base with drainage so they don’t heave or wash out. Steps usually connect to something a walkwa, an entry, or a grade change in the yard and we build that transition so there’s no awkward or dangerous last step.

Every riser the same height and every tread the same depth the single biggest factor in whether steps feel solid or make people stumble.

Excavated to depth and set on a compacted base with drainage, so freeze-thaw and heavy clay can’t lift or shift them.

Natural stone slabs, modular block units, or set boulders we match the material to the look of your home and yard.

The crew that quotes your steps builds them. One accountable team from layout to the final walkthrough hardscape is never subbed out.
Built for safety and built to last handled the right way, start to finish.

We measure the slope and total rise, plan the number of steps and any landings, and lay out a safe, comfortable stair no odd last step.

We dig to the right depth and build a compacted base so the whole stair sits on solid ground, not loose fill that settles.

Every riser and tread is set to the same dimensions the detail that makes steps feel sure-footed instead of hazardous.

Steps built in your chosen material natural stone slabs, modular block, or boulders set tight, level, and cut clean where needed.

Treads pitched to shed water, drainage behind and under the steps, and a solid tie-in to the walkway, wall, or entry they meet.

We build in code-safe geometry and add railings where the grade calls for it, coordinate step lighting, clean up, and walk it with you.
Almost every failed set of steps failed for one of these reasons. Here’s how we build past each one

25+ years of Johnson County hardscape and the base-first, safety-first build steps actually require

We obsess over consistent rise and run and no-trip transitions, because with steps that’s the difference between solid and dangerous

Deep compacted base and real drainage, specced for the soil and freeze-thaw we have here not a generic depth.

One team quotes and builds your steps, accountable from layout to the last walkthrough.

Whatever material fits your home, we set it level, tight, and to last and tie it cleanly into the rest of the yard
Three steps to a stair that’s safe and built to last.
We measure the grade and total rise, talk material options, plan the layout and any landing, and give you a written quote.
We excavate, build and compact the base, set the steps to consistent rise and run in your chosen material, and build in drainage and the tie-in.
We add railings where needed, coordinate any step lighting, clean up, and walk the finished stair with you.

The three we build most are natural stone slabs, modular block units, and set boulders. Natural stone gives the most high-end, organic look and lasts effectively forever; block gives a clean, consistent, often more budget-friendly look; boulder steps suit a natural or garden setting. We’ll match the material to your home and how the steps will be used. Poured concrete is the budget alternative, but it cracks as one piece and can’t be spot-repaired the way set stone or block can.
It depends on the total rise and number of steps, the material, how much excavation and drainage the slope needs, and whether railings or a landing are included. A short run to an entry and a long hillside stair are very different projects, so we don’t post a flat price we measure the grade and quote your actual steps for free.
Almost always because of the base. Steps set on thin or uncompacted fill shift as Johnson County’s clay swells and our winters freeze and thaw, which lifts risers unevenly and opens gaps. Poured concrete steps crack as one slab for the same reason. The fix is a deep, compacted base with drainage and consistent geometry which is exactly how we build them. If your current steps are already failing, that’s a replacement we handle every week.
It depends on how steep the run is and how many steps there are a couple of broad stone steps usually don’t, while a tall or steep stair is safer with one (and may be required). We build steps with safe, consistent rise and run as the foundation, and add a railing where the grade or step count calls for it. We’ll flag it during the estimate so it’s planned in, not an afterthought.
Yes that’s one of the most common things we’re asked for. We measure the total rise, break it into even steps with landings where the run is long, and build the whole stair on a compacted base so it holds on the grade. A well-built hillside stair turns an unusable slope into a safe, good-looking way through the yard.
Yes steps are the single best place for lighting, and planning it with the build means the wiring is handled cleanly. We coordinate step landscape lighting confirm and tie the steps into a new or existing walkway so the whole approach flows.

The work the lawnmaintenance workers did for us was exceptional. I have many shrubs and bushes and they trimmed everything beautifully. And just as important, they cleaned up all the trimmings _ and there was a lot _ as well as some other yard waste. We so appreciate such good work. Thank you.![]()

Steps almost always tie into something else we build. Here’s how they connect to the rest of our Design & Build work.
